TU Dublin were delighted to support Transition Year and Leaving Cert Applied students from Riversdale Community College who recently participated in the Media Literacy and Interview Skills course at Phoenix FM.

Forty four students attended twenty workshops which ran over 4 hours between April 1st - May 24th. Delivered by industry professionals and radio trainers, the workshops covered a variety of practical and theoretical topics, as well hands-on radio recording. The students gained valuable career skills from the course, such as planning, researching, time management and teamwork and it has sparked a long-term interest in media production and theory for many students.

Participants also had an opportunity to visit the Phoenix FM radio studio, where they met staff and volunteers and witnessed first-hand what goes on behind the scenes at a busy radio studio. The students also took part in a question and answer session, received tuition from station staff and had an opportunity to go 'on-air' to talk about the training and the support given by TU Dublin in this endeavour. This experience will stay with the students for years to come.

As part of the course, each student 'production team' researched, planned and recorded an interview with people of interest from within their school. These interviews will form the 'Riversdale Takeover, supported by TU Dublin' week (broadcasting the week of June 3rd) and will showcase the worked carried out by the students at Phoenix FM.

An award ceremony took place in Blanchardstown Library on May 24th where a cross-section of students were presented with certificates of completion by 92.5 Vice Chairperson Tony Maycock and Mairead Murphy, Marketing & Development Manager at TU Dublin Blanchardstown. Station Manager Lynn Simpson and Tony Maycock offered words of encouragement for the students on their achievements and voiced appreciation to TU Dublin for their continued support. Teacher, Cathal McDaniel stated appreciation to 92.5 Phoenix FM for the delivery of work and to TU Dublin for their continued support on working with local communities and schools.

What our students say...

Monika Karaliunaite

"Basically the course covers everything to do with digital and online media. I had it as a hobby in sixth year but when I came here I learned so much more."
