TU Dublin transformation projects awarded EUR1.9 Million by HEA

TU Dublin has been awarded EUR 1.9 million under the HEA 'Higher Education System Innovation and Transformation Call 2018' for two transformation projects. The projects will commence in January 2019 and will run over three years.

The first project, 'Transformative Student-Centred Learning Record' (Transform-EDU) is led by Dr. Philip Owende, Academic Quality Manager at TU Dublin - Blanchardstown Campus. With a grant of EUR 1.4 million, it aims to develop and pilot an innovative approach to learning that will see elements of structured programmes integrated with extra-curricular activities, creating a rich learning environment. Welcoming the grant Dr. Owende said 'The funding of these projects across our TU Dublin campuses is a significant development in our transformation as Ireland's first Technological University. We have every confidence that these projects will contribute significantly in improving the third-level education landscape in Ireland in the years ahead'. According to Dr. Owende Transform-EDU considers that, whereas key learning outcomes are achievable within any structured discipline-specific academic curriculum, graduates seeking employment need to acquire a wide range of skills. 'The 21st-century graduate profiles espoused by employers are dynamic, requiring an equally agile learning ecosystem, to ensure graduates meet and exceed the technical and employability skills demanded in a wide spectrum of job-roles'.

The focus of the second project, which has received funding of EUR 500,000, is on student retention. 'Enhancing Student Retention Across TU Dublin' is led by Professor Mike Murphy, Director of Academic Affairs, Digital & Learning Transformation at TU Dublin - City Campus. The project addresses a number of known causes of student withdrawal with an overall goal of increasing retention of full-time first-year students by 2% between January 2019 and December 2021. Professor Murphy said 'In seeking to improve retention, the TU Dublin philosophy is to create a student centred environment in which our students are given all the necessary tools, opportunities and support to enable them to take responsibility for their own engagement with academic work. The awarding of this funding is a significant achievement for TU Dublin and we look forward to commencing work in earnest on both of these projects'.
