ITB's newly launched MEng Programme in the Internet of Things Technologies bags two GradIreland Higher Ed Awards 2017 Nominations

ITB's Master of Engineering in Internet of Things (IoT) Technologies programme has been shortlisted for the 2017 GradIreland Higher Education Awards in the two categories of :

Best New Course, and;
Engineering Course of the Year.



The shortage of workforce with appropriate knowledge and skills is reported as the biggest obstacle to more extensive deployment of IoT technologies (Witchells C, 2013, IoT Business Index, The Economist Intelligence Unit).
Recent estimates suggest that IoT could grow into a market worth $7.1 trillion by 2020 (Wortmann F & K Fluchter, 2015, Internet of things, Business & Information Systems Engineering 57(3)), by which time up to 100 billion devices will be connected to the Internet (excluding traditional internet devices such as smartphones and tablets), with year-on-year growth approximately 35% (Fletcher D, 2015, IoT: Evolution of Cyber Technologies and Operations to 2035, Springer Int. Publishing).
Other credible market intelligence reports have also expressed, what now seems to be a collective view that IoT technology areas can only experience rapid growth into the medium to long-term future (Roundup-of-internet-of-things-forecasts-and-market-estimates-2015. Forbes/Tech, December 27, 2015).



Ireland is presently positioning itself as a hub for IoT technology research & development by sourcing for appropriate skills needs in the IoT space. Therefore, the MEng in IoT Technologies programme will contribute to endeavours that will ensure that Ireland has the highly skilled, research ready, and research capable engineers required to take advantage of IoT as the next "industrial revolution".



The MEng programme was launched by ITB in 2016, and is currently being offered in two versions; 1-year full-time and 2-year part-time.
The programme structure consists of taught modules and research projects in two possible pathways, with a common Semester 1 consisting of the core modules. Key distinction of the pathways are in the 30 ECTS Credit and 60 ECTS Credits Research Project, for Pathway 1 and Pathway 2, respectively.

Applicants wishing to pursue this programme are required to have a minimum of Honours/Level 8 degree in Electronic Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and Computer Science, or cognate disciplines. Applicants with degrees in cognate disciplines, are assessed on a case-by-case basis, and on the basis of their relevant work experience.

The award ceremony takes place on Thursday 24 November 2016 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown.
