Irish Foster Care Seminar at ITB

Irish Foster Care Association seminar "Foster care in the 21st century".
The Irish Foster Care Association’s next seminar takes place on May 17th at the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB). The seminar entitled ’Foster Care in the 21st Century’ will focus on such diverse issues such as diversity in gender and sexuality in adolescence, bullying in schools and the impact of childhood neglect in terms of its potential traumatisation of children.



Speakers will include Dr. Valerie O’Brien and Michael Corcoran.
Valerie is social worker and a systemic family therapist.  She works as a lecturer and research in UCD. She is an associate at Clanwilliam Institute, Dublin where she works with complex families. She has recently been appointed by the Minister as independent academic for the implementation of Alternative Care developments in the HSE.
Michael Corcoran has worked in the field of Residential Social Care for many years and laterally specialized in the development of therapeutic programmes for children and family intervention services.  Mike is a Clinical supervisor for the family Intervention programme in the Aislinn Adolescent Addiction Centre and a member of the International Association of Forensic Psychotherapy.



A series of workshops will be held and facilitated by ITB and HSE staff including managing challenging behavior, relating to the reluctant and stress management for foster carers.
The conference will be opened by Nora Gibbons, former Barnardos Director of advocacy and Chair of the new Child and Family Agency.
