What is the Learn and Work Programme at ITB?

In response to demands from the ICT Sector and increasing interest in technology programmes amongst school leavers and mature students ITB is launching a new Learn and Work programme for trainee network engineers.

The Higher Certificate in Science in Computing in Networking Technologies is the first programme in ITB's Learn and Work suite. This innovative third level programme has been designed with industry, combining in-company placement with the required skills and competencies for today's high-tech companies.

The ITB Learn and Work programme will create a connection between the student's academic life and the world of work.

The Learn and Work programme is supported by ICT Ireland Skillnet.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will gain skills in Network Engineer, Computer Systems, Network Engineering, Infrastructure, Networking, Virtualisation, Operating Systems, IT Security and Project Management. Each of these skills can be built upon through further study and/or industry certification.

The programme prepares candidates for careers in becoming a Network Engineer, Networking, Data Centre and Cloud based disciplines.

 

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants will require a grade O6/H7 in five subjects, these subjects must include Maths and English or Irish.

The minimum entry requirements for graduates of QQI-FET (formerly FETAC) level 5 or 6 awards is any full award. This award must include Mathematics (C20139) or Mathematics for Computing (C20175) or Mathematics for Engineering (C20174)

Mature applicants (i.e. those who are aged 23 years or more on January 1st in the year of entry) applying for the programme are exempt from this requirement.

 

In addition to the minimum entry requirements, applicants are required to

  1. Submit a Curriculum Vitae
  2. Attend and successfully complete an Aptitude test
  3. Attend and successfully complete an interview at ITB
  4. Attend screening for company interviews
  5. Attend scheduled company interviews
  6. Successful candidates will be awarded a place on the Programme

 

*** Provisional dates for aptitude tests ***

First round of aptitude tests will be May 15th (3-4pm) and May 17th (6-7pm) with interview day the following week on Wednesday May 24th.

Second round of aptitude tests will be June 6th (3-4pm) and June 8th (6-7pm) with interview day Wednesday June 14th.

A third round of aptitude tests have been scheduled for August 15th (3-4pm) with interview day the following week on Tuesday August 22nd.

Anyone applying must be available for aptitude test and, if successful, interview on Tuesday August 29th. This will be the last round of tests and interviews.

 

Work Placement and Course Schedule

ITB will endeavour to find suitable work placements for all students. Students may organise their own placements but the employer must be approved by ITB.

Year 1 : Four months full time study and eight months with employer, attending one day per week in college.

Year 2 : Four months in college and eight months with your employer attending college one day per week.  Successful candidates must be available for all training and work sessions.

  • Linux Professional Institute (LPIC-1)
  • Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician
  • Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS)
  • Cisco Certified Networking Associate
  • VMware Certified Associate – Cloud (VCA-Cloud)
  • Microsoft Certified Systems Expert Server Infrastructure (MCSE)
  • CompTIA Security+

 

* The programme gives students the knowledge required to gain these certifications; however it is the students own responsibility to take the exam required for the certification itself.  ITB will facilitate this; one attempt at the certification is available to the student at no extra cost.

Fees, Grants and Company Payment Information

Fees for this course are covered by ICT Skillnet. This applies to entrants in September 2017.

Students on this programme will be registered as full time students. Full-time students at ITB may be eligible to make an application to SUSI for a maintenance grant. Please go to www.susi.ie to check eligibility. You do not need to have accepted a place in college to apply for a student grant.

Trainees on this course who secure work placement may receive a subsistence payment

 

Back to Education Allowance

The Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) allows qualifying persons to return to full-time education in approved courses while continuing to get income support.
